Evolution of the Sustainability Concept: From the MDGs to Agenda 2030

Jun 12, 2024

Sustainability is a concept that has evolved significantly since its introduction in the Brundtland Report in 1987. This report defined sustainable development as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Since then, sustainability has progressed from being an emerging concern to becoming a global priority.

From the Millennium Development Goals to Agenda 2030

In 2000, during the Millennium Summit, the United Nations established the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), a roadmap designed to address global challenges such as poverty, hunger, health, education, gender equality, and environmental sustainability. The commitment was to achieve these goals by 2015.

Although significant progress was made, it became clear that a broader and longer-term approach was necessary. This led to the development of Agenda 2030 in 2015, a global action plan adopted by over 190 countries. Agenda 2030 focuses on 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), covering economic, social, and environmental aspects. These goals require the collaboration and joint effort of governments, businesses, and citizens worldwide to achieve.

 Unwavering Commitment to Sustainability

Our approach to sustainability is grounded in the implementation of best environmental practices. We strive to prevent and minimise adverse environmental impacts and conserve natural resources.

Each project we undertake is an opportunity to make a positive difference, not only in the built environment but also in the quality of life of the communities in which we operate.

At Terapia Urbana, we are deeply committed to the principles of Agenda 2030.

Our work in urban green infrastructure aligns with several of the SDGs, contributing to the creation of sustainable and resilient cities.

Terapia Urbana and the Sustainable Development Goals

SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being

At Terapia Urbana, we understand the importance of health and well-being in urban communities. The living walls and other green solutions we implement have a direct impact on improving air quality, reducing the presence of pollutants, and increasing oxygen levels. Additionally, these green infrastructures act as acoustic barriers, decreasing urban noise and creating more tranquil and relaxing environments.

Our projects are designed to provide accessible green spaces that promote physical activity and mental well-being. The presence of plants and vegetation has been shown to have positive effects on mental health, reducing stress and improving mood. By integrating nature into urban environments, we are creating spaces where people can enjoy a better quality of life.

SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities

Cities face significant challenges to becoming inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable.

At Terapia Urbana, our initiatives are designed to address these challenges by integrating nature into urban environments. Living walls  not only beautify urban areas but also provide practical solutions to issues such as stormwater management, thermal insulation, and pollution reduction.

We work to create urban spaces that foster social cohesion and inclusion, offering accessible green areas for everyone. These spaces contribute to urban resilience, helping cities adapt to the effects of climate change and other environmental challenges. By promoting the use of green infrastructure, we help transform cities into more liveable and sustainable places.

SDG 13: Climate Action

Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our era, and at Terapia Urbana, we are committed to taking action. We implement green infrastructures that play a crucial role in mitigating climate change. Our living walls and green roofs help reduce the carbon footprint of buildings by improving thermal insulation and decreasing the need for heating and cooling.

Furthermore, the plants used in our green solutions absorb carbon dioxide, a major greenhouse gas, thus contributing to the reduction of total emissions. We promote sustainable practices and the use of green technologies to maximise energy efficiency and minimise environmental impact. Each project we undertake is designed with the goal of contributing to a more sustainable and climate-resilient future.

SDG 15: Life on Land

Biodiversity is essential for the balance of ecosystems, and at Terapia Urbana, we strive to foster it in urban environments. Our green infrastructure projects create habitats for diverse species of plants, insects, and birds, contributing to urban biodiversity. These green spaces act as biological corridors, connecting natural areas and allowing for the movement and interaction of species.

We work to restore and preserve local ecosystems, using native and adapted plant species that require fewer resources and provide ecological benefits. By integrating nature into cities, we not only enhance the urban environment but also support the conservation of ecosystems and biodiversity, creating a more balanced and sustainable environment.

Our Sustainability Strategy for 2030

Looking to the future, our sustainability strategy for 2030 is based on continuing to develop and implement innovative solutions that not only meet but exceed environmental standards.

At Terapia Urbana, we are committed to:

Continuous Innovation: Improving and expanding our green infrastructure solutions to maximise their positive impact on the environment and communities.
– Collaboration and Education: Working closely with businesses, administrations, and communities, and educating all stakeholders about the benefits of green infrastructure.
– Long-term Impact: Ensuring that each project we undertake has a lasting and positive impact, contributing to the well-being of present and future generations.

Sustainability is a shared responsibility and a global goal. At Terapia Urbana, we are proud to be part of this movement, working to create a greener, healthier, and more sustainable future for all.
